About the author Stanimir Panayotov spanayotov gmail. Sextures 3 Just as political economy needs a better appreciation of the stubbornness of cultural difference, so does queer theory require some basic knowledge of political institutions and an appreciation of the ways in which economic and cultural globalisation is creating a newly universal sense of homosexuality as the basis for identity and lifestyle, not merely for behaviour.
The value of this collection lies exactly in the refusal of both unconscious provocation of theoretical colonization from the West and the conscious readiness for theoretical self-colonization from the East. The growing body of literature on Eastern European sexualities itself is not that far away from the devlopment of queer studies in Europe.
Which brings us closer to a shared concern central to this volume, one which does not involve merely geopolitical opposities. There is an inherent problem in volumes like this, of which the editors have great awareness: that the politics of dislocation involves being postmodern without a project of modernity lived; that the politics of deconstruction and subversion involves a preceding identity politics. Geopolitically structured editions like this one face the risk of colonizing the queer politics of the said region while seeking to transcend this process in the course of the analyses offered, for the queer discourse has no genealogy in Europe itself.
There is something much more unifying rather than disjunctive here and this is the non-originary status of queer in Europe as a continental fixity.
obojycez.tk Although the risk exists since this landmark research is being published in the West and very much for a Western readership. Not only because English is the language of queer studies, but also because queer scholars in CEE countries can still be easily counted.
Which is one of the reasons why English is the lingua franca of queer. The other way of textual communication will be linguistic integration, through learning languages, which is a precarious form of capital for queer scholars in CEE as it diminishes the chances for academic communication from within a discipline already marginal in both an academic and a paradigmatic way. Thus beyond the linguistic concern and the one of publishing processes , Eastern European queer scholarship is already in the process of its assimilation.

At its broadest, the project asks: How are kinship and family bonds created, practiced and narrated among GLBTQ people, within and beyond the confines of the law? Budapest: CEU Press. Duda, M. The new crucial dimension which the editors have opened concerns mainly the western eye, and a certain prospect for openness in the West for what is Western-centricity in LGBTIQ studies. So far in CEE the disciplinary boundaries of sexuality research have imprisoned subject matters between the walls of political sciences and economics. In lines with transitological discourses of CEE modernization, neoliberalism with its corresponding development of docile and consumerist LGBT identities has gone often unnoticed in both CEE modernizations and gay liberations, where market economy flourishes and transformed crisis into daily life see Dale along with export of Western discourses of civilized sexual citizenship Weeks Why do I raise the concept of racism here?
The model of knotted time does not merely advocate for the contemporaneity of CEE and an affluence of liberation, for this will be self-racialization and self-deprivation of the possibility to write meta theoretically and act universally, always already in a Western work-frame, and thus to revert back to some obligatory premodernity.
As Marcuse noted in Eros and Civilization: Historical backwardness may again become the historical chance of turning the wheel of progress to another direction. By revealing in various ways the transitological geopolitics and neoliberal othering of this particular region, much of this volume makes it clear how difference and modernization can be imposed as a repression tool not only on sexual identities, but on a macro-social level, see esp.
Such researches prove that transitological discourses that make perrenial the politics of othering and particularity and even worse — introducing a certain sense of dignity out of such particularity cannot be perpetuated in the context of sexuality research, and much beyond that. In these societies there are unique processes of defining forms of sexual citizenship beyond the matrices of Western LGBT liberationsim and UN developmentalism.
De-centring Western Sexualities: Central and Eastern European Perspectives .. offers the proliferation of perspectives on the meaning and. De-Centring Western Sexualities critically assesses the current state of De- Centring Western Sexualities: Central and Eastern European Perspectives, 1st Edition (Hardback Central and Eastern European Perspectives, 1st Edition.
This volume sheds light on such a statement, although not involving a sound notion of sexual citizenship at any rate for reasons of political realism. To our satisfaction, De-Centring Western Sexualities reveals that queer studies is at the forefront of this process. Notes 1. We should not bother ourselves with this question since Europe itself is not the maternity ward of queer studies.
